Help your child become a self-directed, independent, self-regulated learner.
Self-regulated learners (SRL) are aware of their own learning strengths and challenges, are guided by their own personal goals and tasks, and are intrinsically motivated to learn. Current research suggests that students who are self-regulating demonstrate greater self-confidence and academic success in their abilities to perform class work in different academic domains and settings.
For some students, self-regulation is inherent and comes naturally. For others, it does not. Therefore, intervention in learning to employ learning strategies (sometimes referred to as executive functioning skills or study skills) is critical for students to learn to become self-directive, independent, self-confident, and successful. This includes the development of:
Time management skills
Goal setting
Planning
Organizing new information
Seeking help appropriately
Planning and self-pacing
Practicing and memorizing
Self-monitoring and self-evaluation
Completing assignments efficiently and independently
Dr. Cappelloni coaches individual students in grades two through nine in SRL strategies. She provides support to families with homework assignments, schedules, and communication with the student’s teacher(s).
